Tracking Your Equipment & Warranties
Knowing what equipment you have, how old it is, and what is covered under warranty is one of the most practical things HomeCommand does for you. Here is how it works.
Equipment extraction from your inspection report is available on the free Basic plan. Warranty insights (coverage details, expiration dates) require Pro. See the full plan comparison →
How equipment is detected
When you upload an inspection report, HomeCommand automatically extracts every major appliance and system it finds. This typically includes:
- HVAC systems (furnace, air conditioner, heat pump)
- Water heater
- Electrical panel
- Roof, gutters, and ventilation systems
- Kitchen appliances (when mentioned)
- Garage door openers, sump pumps, and other mechanical systems
For each piece of equipment, HomeCommand extracts as much detail as is present in the report — including model and serial numbers, estimated installation year, condition notes, and the inspector's specific comments.
What you can see on the Equipment page
Navigate to the Equipment section in the sidebar to see all tracked items. For each piece of equipment you will find:
- Name and type — What the equipment is and where in the home it is located
- Installation year — When it was installed, if found in the report
- Expected lifespan — Average useful life for that type of equipment
- Model and serial number — Extracted from the inspection report when available
- Source link — The exact page in your inspection report where this was mentioned
- Associated issues — Any problems found with this piece of equipment
- Maintenance tasks — Recurring tasks linked to this item (e.g., filter changes)
Adding equipment manually
Not every appliance will appear in your inspection report — for example, a new refrigerator you brought with you or equipment installed after you moved in. You can add items manually from the Equipment page using the "Add Equipment" button.
When adding equipment manually, you can record:
- Equipment type and name
- Location in the home
- Installation or purchase date
- Model and serial number
- A photo of the unit or its data label
Tracking warranties
Upload your warranty documents — appliance manuals, builder warranties, HVAC service contracts — and HomeCommand will extract the coverage details automatically. For each document it will identify:
- What is covered and what is excluded
- Coverage period and expiration date
- Contact information for making a claim
Warranty information is linked to the equipment it covers, so you always know at a glance whether a broken item is still under warranty before calling a contractor.
Tip: photograph model and serial tags
Add a photo of the data label on each major appliance when you first move in. These labels contain model and serial numbers that are essential for warranty claims, ordering parts, and scheduling service — and they can fade or become unreadable over time.
Archiving and replacing equipment
When a piece of equipment is replaced, you can archive the old record and add the new one. This keeps your equipment list current while preserving the history — useful when you sell the home and want to show buyers what has been upgraded.
Why equipment tracking matters
Most homeowners do not know how old their water heater or furnace is until it breaks down. HomeCommand surfaces this information proactively so you can plan ahead:
- Budget for replacements before they become emergencies
- Know immediately whether a failed appliance is under warranty
- Give contractors accurate information when requesting quotes
- Build a documented equipment history that adds value when selling
